Hurricane Lowell never made landfall. It passed about 50 miles west of Niihau as a Category 2 and still knocked out power to roughly 90 percent of Kauai County, making it the strongest hurricane to affect the main Hawaiian Islands since Iniki in 1992. Here is why a forecast track that misses you is not the same as a storm that misses you.
Lowell tracked less than 50 miles west of Niihau as a Category 2 hurricane on Sunday night into Monday. It never made landfall on Kauai or Niihau. By the test most people apply - did the eye cross the coast - it missed.
It still knocked out power to roughly 90 percent of homes and businesses in Kauai County, and to more than 60,000 customers statewide. Wind gusts reached 87 mph at Nawiliwili and 84 mph at Lihue. Forecasters warned of surf up to 25 feet and the possibility of tornadoes near Kauai and Niihau.
That makes Lowell the strongest hurricane to affect the main Hawaiian Islands since Category 4 Iniki in 1992. Heavy rain, flash flooding and landslides are expected to continue across the islands through midweek.

The cone on a hurricane map shows where the center of the storm is likely to travel. It is not a damage map. Hurricane-force gusts reached as far as 70 miles from the center of Lowell, so a track drawn 50 miles offshore still ran the destructive wind field straight over the island.
This is the most common way households get caught out. The line misses your town, the preparation stops, and the wind arrives anyway. The wind field does not care where the line was drawn.
The practical rule: decide from the watches and warnings issued for your county and from the size of the wind field, not from whether the track of the center touches you. If a hurricane warning is posted where you live, you are in it, whatever the track says.

Sea-surface temperatures ran roughly 2.2 to 2.6 degrees Celsius above average through August.
